VRN 400/ VRN 500: HARD WEARING AND ABRASION RESISTANT STEELS Sagar Steel Corporation supplies and sells wear Resistant Abrasion Steel plates. VRN 500, VRN 450 and VRN 400 Steel plates. Wear resistant steel is used in areas where there is likely to be a high degree of abrasion or wear of the steel plate. Typical applications are in truck beds, attachments to diggers and earth movers and in processing applications in the mining industry. The key quality for wear resistant steel is their hardness. We sell wear plate according to its hardness measured on the Brinnell Hardness Test – usually in 400HB and 500HB grades. If your specification is to the Rockwell Test we can also advise. Steels with a high HB rating (Brinell Hardness) are intended for applications where wear or abrasion resistance is important. The benefit of using an abrasion resistant steel is that that the plant, machinery or constructions working life can be extended considerably. This can significantly improve the reliability, durability and safety of structures and equipment. It also helps to reduce the maintenance costs associated with wear and breakdown of plant. VRN 400 and VRN 500 are high hardness conventional low alloy martensitic steel grades for use in applications requiring high resistance to wear, impact and abrasion. These steels have a nominal hardness of 400 BHN and 500 BHN respectively. The low carbon and alloying elements incorporated with heat treated intense roller quenching and/or tempering process ensures optimal combination of hardness, toughness and weldability. Typical applications - Earthmoving equipment, chute liners, hoppers, wear plates, clamshell buckets, truck bowl liners and storage-bin liners. Hot working VRN 400 and VRN 500 obtain their hardness through intense quenching and/or tempered at 200-400°C. To ensure that full hardness is retained, the steel should therefore not be worked at temperatures exceeding 250°C. Flame cutting Modern flame cutting practices may be employed, however it is advisable to preheat from 65°C to 120°C. Drilling Alternative methods such as hole fabrication with oxy-fuel processes or stud welding should be considered. Due to the high hardness, drilling of this plate is difficult and costly.
